Special to the Horsetrader - May 17th, 2012 - Show & Event News

BAKERSFIELD – Lance Johnston used a 152 score in cow work aboard This Cats Smart Too to vault past the field and win the Open Championship of the Valley Cow Horse Association Hackamore Showdown, held April 27-28 at the Sundance Arena in Bakersfield.

For his win with This Cats Smart Too, owned by Katie Moon, Johnston earned the $4,000 Open purse. Reserve champion Phillip Ralls on Chris Larcon’s Dom Dualuise – who had marked a 150 in the herd work – collected $3,124.

The Hackamore Showdown, followed on Sunday with a show of VCHA and National Reined Cow Horse Association classes, was the first of three major VCHA stock horse events on the calendar in 2012. Others will include the Futurity July 27-28, with VCHA and NRCHA classes on July 29, and the Super Show with Saddle Shootout on Oct. 27-28.

Mark Luis won the Intermediate Open Championship at the Hackamore Showdown on Gallo My Heart, owned by Nancy McDonald. Luis, who claimed the $1,380 purse in the division, accumulated a 434 total score – five more than Reserve Intermediate Open Champion Monica DeBie on Bob Klem’s Smart Rockin Pepinic.

DeBie also took the Limited Open Championship on Smart Rockin Pepinic, earning $1,043.

Other Hackamore Showdown champions included Carol Roberts on her Oaks Dual Rey in the Non Pro Division, earning $1,425, and Julie O’Rear on Circlin All Day in the Amateur, picking up $688.

Tammy Johnston collected $1,918 combined winnings for her Championship in the Intermediate Non Pro and Reserve in the Non Pro.

Doug Williamson was the headliner in Sunday’s classes, winning the VCHA/NRCHA Open Bridle competition on Janie Jill Tointon’s Shining Lil Nic, outpointing Ron Emmons on Doug Granade’s Reygan’s Smart Lena.

The VCHA is primed for participation in 2012 with an inviting saddle series in four divisions: VCHA Youth Limited, VCHA Non-Pro Bridle, VCHA 5K Non-Pro Limited, and VCHA Novice Non-Pro (green class). The award saddles will be given to the first-place qualified rider in each division.
