RANCHO MURIETA — Competition was fierce, but the weather was not at the third and fourth 2013 West Coast Reining Horse Association Affiliate shows held May 23-26 at Murieta Equestrian Center at Rancho Murieta.

Just over 200 horses and riders enjoyed the high 70s, low 80s which held for all four days of the show, which also featured the WCRHA Shootout competition. After exhibitors and friends enjoyed a potluck of food and drinks, the Non Pro Shootout commenced, as an enthusiastic crowd cheered the 27 entrants.

In the end, both young and not-so-young prevailed — Sandy Bentien and her 11-year-old mare, Make It With A Twist, won $2,100 after a winning 145.5 score. In the Limited Non Pro class, the “young” came out on top with Nicole Hupke winning on Ollie Galligan’s Moon Stones Finest with a score of 144. Youth competitors, Charlize Zuraek and Rollin Back Rawhide and Courtney Yohey on Imasmartlittlecheese tied for second with scores of 141.5.

In Sunday’s Open classes, Galligan rode Lavonne Sturgeon’s California Shines to a 73 that took the Open ahead of reserve winner Tracer Gilson on Anniespackinapistol, owned by Joe and Karen Moran. In the Intermediate Open, Galligan and California Shines tied for first with Eric LaPorte riding Mr. Mizzen Shine owned by Lance Griffin. David Hanson and Giselle Turchet’s Load Your Gun were third.

David Hanson took Giselle Turchet’s Load Your Gun, shown here in an earlier reining, to the Affiliate 3 Open title and Affiliate 4 Open reserve at the WCRHA Shootout weekend May 23-26.

Joni Carvin took home a title for owners Derek Brummett and Kelli Brooksby in the Prime Time Open on Tuffy’s Dixie. Second went to Nev Devine and Peptos Silver Holly. Devine also won second in the Rookie Professional, half-point behind Alejandro Ramirez who won the class on Loren Booth’s Rawhide Whizkid.

In Sunday’s Non Pro action, Joey Pacini started off with a bang, taking his Cash Me If U Can to to a 74 and the Non Pro title. Debi Murnan and Chromer Simpson tied for second with Courtney Yohey on Imasmartlittlecheese. Pacini also won the Intermediate Non Pro class with Yohey in reserve.

In the large Limited Non Pro class, Yohey scored a 73.5 with Imasmartlittlecheese that earned them first place money, with Debbie Valdero placing second on her Plan Your Luck.

In the Prime Time Non Pro, Debi Murnan and Chromer Simpson came out ahead of Custom Coffee and Marion Walker. Marion’s score of 71.5, though, held for first place in the Master Non Pro ahead of second place finisher Sally Hoppe and her Whoa A Whiz.

The NRHA Green Reiners followed, and in Level 2, Britta Jacobson was thrilled to see her husband, Ted, win the class aboard her own Derby horse, Sir Don Q. Not only did Ted achieve his goal of a 70 score, he surpassed it by two points for a 72. Felicia Puerta rode A Shining Magnum to reserve with a 71.5. In the Level 2, Lynn Walker grabbed first on Chexout This Mirage, and Patricia Eckhoff went home with a second placing on her Bayside Sailor.

In the Snaffle/Hackamore class, Christian Rammerstorfer rode Kathleen Cook’s Sisterswildchild to first place, followed by Jenny Sherbo on her own Diamonds On My Mind.
