HUNTINGTON BEACH — The California Reining Horse Association has a foolproof formula for putting on the summer’s coolest reining shows: Hold them at the beach.

That’s what the CRHA did Aug. 1 for its annual Slide On The Beach at the Huntington Beach Central Park Equestrian Center, and the raves — like the waves — came in.

“This is definitely our ‘coolest’ annual event,’ said CRHA board member Lisa Anderson. “Cool not only because this year’s temperature was 78 degrees with the benefit of Huntington Beach’s offshore breeze but, it also brings out the coolness of all our competitors.

Anderson said the camaraderie and fun was evident throughout the day, as competitors and spectators truly supported and cheered one another.

The event, CRHA’s fourth in its five-event schedule, is considered a Jackpot show, much like its popular “Fiesta Fever” event in May.

“CRHA members are afforded the opportunity to compete for the coveted year-end titles, and everyone is able to earn a little extra money while enjoying a fun summer day near the beach,” added Anderson, who said the 2015 CRHA Slide on the Beach event was almost double in size from last year.

Lynda Hardwick and Big Hollywood Chex captured both the Rookie L2 and Limited Non Pro titles.

“We sold out of our annual Slide on the Beach t-shirts and tank tops!” she said. “We are so grateful to our awesome CRHA members and supporters — we would not be as cool without them.”

In addition to enjoying the camaraderie, Anderson enjoyed success in the show pen, winning the Non Pro title with her Easy Otie Buckles. The Open championship went to Tom Foran on Crome Plated Step, owned by Taylor Sheridan, and Foran also picked up the Novice Horse Open on Custom Crown, owned by Robert Hutcherson.

The star youth was Kelly Caron on Great Grullo Pine, while Kristi Berg took the Ladies Championship on Smugglin Diamonds, owned by ECRC Ranch.

The next event sponsored by the CRHA is a big one, The Challenge, set for Oct. 21-25 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.
