If you aren’t familiar with the Oregon Horse Center National Mountain Trail Championships, be sure to take a look! Scheduled this Nov. 7-9 in Eugene, Ore., the Mountain Trail competition is the brainchild of Major Defoe. Inspired by a Welsh Pony trail class in 2001 while watching ponies balk at a cut-out of a cow, Defoe held the first Mountain Trail Competition in 2002. Seventeen years later, there might be many other outdoor mountain trail courses, but none are as impressive and unique as the original Oregon Horse Center Indoor Mountain Trail National Championship Course.

Built only once a year, it takes two weeks for the arenas to undergo the transformation. Two hundred tons of rocks and dirt are hauled in to transform the arena into the legendary “Championship Course”. Complete with ditches, ponds, logs, bridges, waterfalls, streams, trees, trails with rock switchbacks and even a 100-foot mural of the Three Sisters Mountains in the background. The arena takes on a whole new spectacular atmosphere.

The Oregon Horse Center National Mountain Trail Championships has become the most well-known Mountain Trail competition in the country with competitors coming from all over North America and from as far as Europe. Although it is a championship show, it is also open to riders that have never competed before. With divisions for every age and ability, there’s something for everyone at the Nationals. Come find out what your trail horse can do! First-time competitors are welcome to all shows, even the National Championships. There will be a Practice Show Nov. 1-3, the National Championships Nov. 7-9, and Open Practice Nov. 11-Dec. 9. Be sure to see the ad on page 23, and visit www.OregonHorseCenter.com or call (541) 689-9700.
