TEMECULA — Cow horse enthusiasts came out to Green Acres Ranch on July 9-11 to compete at the Grant Berg Memorial Show.

Grant was the son of Mike and Kristi Berg, who train out of their ranch in Temecula. Southern California Reinied Cow Horse Association honored the Bergs with two commemorative headstalls for the First Annual Grant Berg Memorial Show.

Judge Larry Rose saw a group of cutting and herdwork on Friday with Buffy Young taking first in Open Cutting and Senior Cutting. Mark Gaiser took the blue in Non Pro Cutting. Open Herdwork winner was Roy Rich on SJR Smooth Cadillac, with Charles Stevens second on Smokin and Smooth. The Non Pro winner was Danielle Stanton aboard Elenaboonsmal. Garrell Reilly took second on CatBNimbleCatBQuick.

The SCRCHA Kids Ride Free Program was in full swing, highlighted by a fun “Boot Search Race.” The SCRCHA encourages youth riders to take advantage of this program to help foster young people into the sport of reined cow horse.

The heat was not as big a factor as in years past, and with the class slate starting early, everyone was able to end early. Grant Berg Memorial Spectacular Champions were Rich aboard Rocking J Ranch’s SJR Smooth Cadillac in Open, Sarah Bradley riding her own RR Rey To Stylish in Non Pro, and Cynthia Capetillo on Tisa Sweet Kiss in Non Pro Limited.

Cow horse standouts for Saturday and Sunday were Rich winning both days on Very Smart Luck in Open Bridle, and in Limited Open Bridle Saturday’s winner was Patrick Wickenhaiser on Starlight Pepto and on Sunday it was Caitlyn Showalter riding Short and Smart. The Non Pro Bridle winners were Stanton on Elenaboonsmal and Ruth Noring on Mister Olena Chic.

Sarah Bradley won Saturday’s Non Pro Hackamore on RR Rey To Stylish, and on Sunday, Stacey Duestenhaus on her own ISR A Little Lace took the title. Snaffle Bit winner Charles Stevens was showing his own Red Voodoo Remedy.

Youth Division winners included Skylyr Jonkey on Shesa Special Pastel and Gabriana Wagner on Patty Naskiia. Non Pro Limited winners were Candy Flock aboard Say No Way, Erica Katz on Call Me WR, Alexandra Veen on A Boy Named Su, and Leslie Ingham on Tangy Lil Time.

SCRCHA is looking forward to its final show of 2021 next month, as year-end award saddles will be given out.
