Popular ‘kids ride free’ SCRCHA event also inspires adults

TEMECULA — The future of horses is the youth of today, and it looked bright at the 2024 Grant Berg Memorial Horse Show put on by the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association on July 4-7.

Green Acres Ranch hosted the four-day horse event honoring Grant Berg, and there was a nice turnout of horses and riders for the warm days that included three full slates of National Reined Cow Horse Association classes.

Thursday started with cutting and herd work. Standouts in cutting were Homecreek Twilight Cat, ridden by Craig Cowley in Open, and Boonshine Man, ridden by Ruby Robbins. The Open Herd Work went to Rebel Willson, ridden by Jason Grimshaw, with Jenna Stolting and Kit Kat Royal taking the Non Pro. Winning the Youth Herd title was Uno Im Smart, ridden by Alexandria Zingg.

The team of Half Past Boon and Roy Rich had a great weekend, winning the Open Bridle in both show No. 1 and show No. 2. Homecreek Twilight won show No. 3 with Craig Cowley aboard.

In the Limited Open Bridle, Zingg and Uno Im Smart captured the vinctory in show No. 1 and show No. 3, with Patrick Appleby winning in show No. 2 aboard Her Lucky Cat, owned by Julie Donovan. In Non Pro Bridle conmpetition, Ruby Robbins and Wreckless Rey dominated by virtue on wins in show No. 1 and show #2, with Stolting winning show #3.

In the Non Pro Hackamore, Ruth Noring and her horse Nacho won the titles of all three shows. Dustin Turk swept all three shows in Junior Working Cow Horse riding his own Bailout Cat.

The Youth exhibitors not only rode for free but were awarded some awesome prizes, such as scooters donated by Lucky Scooters.

In the Youth Boxing, Hayes Stroschien shined aboard her RR Simple Man in show No. 1, and Keilani Whitesell won show No. 2 and show No. 3 riding Voodoos Glock. In the Junior Youth Boxing, Hayes Stroschien won show No. 1 and show No. 3 with Gabriana Wagner winning the blue in show No. 2 on JA Peekaboo Pep.

The Non Pro Boxing and Box Drive classes were the largest of the weekend. In the Non Pro Boxing show No. 1, Lauren Boychuk won riding Smart Magic Rebel. Natascha Benz Stephenson captured show No. 2 riding Chicolena Boon Boon, and Candy Flock won show No. 3 riding Say No Way.

Jenny Kelly and her horse Im Ichin To Smoke had a very successful weekend, taking home the blue in Non Pro Boxing, Limited Non Pro Boxing, and Select Non Pro Boxing in show No. 1. She won big in show No. 2 in Intermediate Non Pro Boxing, Select Non Pro Boxing and Box Drive. She continued her winning ways in show No. 3, coming out on top in Intermediate Non Pro Boxing, Limited Non Pro Boxing, Select Non Pro Boxing and Box Drive. Cha-Ching!

Cynthia Capetillo won the Box Drive in show No. 1 and took home the Spectacular Buckle for both Box Drive and Non Pro Boxing. Greer Hartman, riding her Kit Kat Sugar Shack, won the Limited Non Pro Boxing at show No. 2.

The final SCRCHA show of the 2024 season will be next month’s September Classic on Sept. 5-8 at Green Acres Ranch. The club will be holding its year-end award and Christmas dinner on Dec. 6 at Green Acres Ranch. More information will be forthcoming on this fun holiday event.
