OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — California reiners made their presence felt at this year’s National Reining Horse Association Futurity, as Golden State competitors took their momentum from strong West Coast campaigns to the NRHA Futurity and Adequan North American Affiliate Championships Nov. 28-Dec. 6. The Open Futurity finals gave a packed house what they were craving – the best of the best in a dramatic finish, right until the end of the second section.

Shine N Spook (Smart Spook x Ebony Shines) and NRHA Five Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida landed in draw 23 in the second section. They earned a 224.5 to jump ahead of the previous leader, Wimpy Chic (Wimpys Little Step x Chics Fancy Lady) and Gabriel Diano, who had marked a 224. Shine N Spook and Flarida held the lead until the last run of the finals when ARC Gunnabeabigstar (Gunnatrashya x Wimpys Little Chic) and NRHA Million Dollar Rider Jordan Larson met the challenge and lit the board with a 224.5 of their own. They decide to share the title and stand as Lucas Oil L4 Open Co-Champions.

The co-championship paid $132,600 each to the owners and $6,980 each to the nominators. Both co-champions were consignments at the 2012 NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Sales.

Three major sales including a new Select Yearling Sale drew attention and strong bids. In the Futurity Prospect Sale, 38 of 51 horses sold, grossing $2.4 million. Average sale price was $48,263, bouyed by high-seller Buena Spook (Smart Spook x Chex Drive), who brought $225,000. The Select Yearling Sale saw 63 of 70 horses sell, averaging $19,430. The high-seller at $112,000 was Pearlly Pistols, a 2013 sorrel filly (Colonels Smoking Gun x Pearlly Handles) consigned by Darling 888 Ranch. The Marketplace Sale had 71 of 87 horses sell, averaging $6,060. High-seller at $23,000 was HF Dirtsurfer, a 2013 red dun colt (Jerry Lees Surprise x Dun It With Flair) consigned by Heritage Farmsand purchased by Ted Kuczynski.
