California’s biggest homegrown horse exposition since 1999 — the Western States Horse Expo — returns to Cal Expo June 11-13, and the Horsetrader will be there! If you plan on going – or if you are thinking about it – be sure to check out our “Expo Shopper’s Guide” online at http://www.horsetrader.com/expo. We asked every vendor “what’s new in 2010”, so here’s a chance to learn what’s new. And – save BIG, too, with coupons for select vendors in this issue on Page 11. (More online, too!)

If you arrive at the Expo and forgot your coupons , be sure to stop by our booth in sponsors’ row to pick up your copy, plus a map on where the best bargains are –and a clinician schedule, too! Horsetrader columnist Ray Ariss (“Hey Ray!”) will be in the Horsetrader booth Friday and Saturday, and columnist Dana Hokana (“Dear Dana”) will be there Saturday to answer your questions in person! The Horsetrader booth is 3313 C.

The UC Davis Horse Barn will hold its 2010 Production Sale on Saturday, June 19, with preview starting at 3:30 p.m. There will be a barbeque at 4:30 p.m., and the sale will start at 6 p.m. This year’s sale will offer a variety of foals, ranging from weanlings to yearlings sired by such stallions as Smart Sugar Badger, Action Jackson, Plain Ole Freckle, Dainty Olena, Bas Blanc and Red Pepto. Foal and stallion managers will be available to answer any questions regarding horses for sale. All proceeds benefit the UC Davis Equine Teaching Program. For a catalog, directions or more info, please call Joel Viloria at (530) 754-4156, and see the ad on page 109.

Our hearts go out to the family of Lori Lyn Goyette, 50, an employee at Broken Horn Saddlery for 23 years who passed away at home on Saturday, May 15, with her family by her side. She was born on July 12, 1959 at Long Beach Community Hospital and graduated from Lakewood High School, Class of 1977. For many years, she ran the Goyette Family Stables. We will miss her warm smile, her infectious laugh and her great sense of humor. Happy Trails, Lori!

Big Horse Feed and Mercantile in Temecula is not just another feed store, and on June 25-26, its sale will not be “just another sale.” It’ll be the 12th Anniversary Sale, and everything in the store will be form 10 percent to 50 percent off! There also will be a Saturday saddle-fitting at 11 a.m., and from 1-2 special guest Dr. Colleen Wilson of Adeptus will be on hand to conduct a seminar, “When Do You Need Supplements?” And as with every great Anniversary Sale at Big Horse, there’s much more. For more details, see the Big Horse ad on page 41, or call 951-676-2544.

The Oregon State University Equestrian Team is in need of donation horses. OSU’s Hunt Seat Team ranked in the top 20 this year at Kentucky Horse Park in May at the IHSA Nationals. The school’s Western team has been ranked in the top five nationally since 2006. OSU Intercollegiate Equestrian Team’s horses mainly consist of donated horses, ranging from top-rated show horses to veteran beginner horses. Many of our western horses have had very successful show careers and consist mainly of Quarter Horses, Paint Horses and Appaloosas. Hunter seat horses consist of “A” show quality Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods. Many of the OSU lesson horses for the beginner program consist of solid, sound, broke retired show/4-H horses. This is a great option for owners that could use a tax deduction. For more information please contact Dawn Salazar at (541) 737-3575, or email her at dawn.salazar@oregonstate.edu.
