TULSA — Pat Langston of Banning may not have started riding until she turned 60, but the former show mom is making up for lost time on the show circuit.

Along with her daughter Kelly, the pupil of Redlands trainer Kirsten Hertsgaard competed at the 46th Annual Pinto World Championship Horse Show with her new gelding, Cash Bar Interest, and came away with a handful of ribbons.

“There are nine of us girls from Kirsten’s barn, and we girls grabbed our horses and went down there for 2 1/2 weeks and played really hard,” said Pat, who took Elite Amateur Division (55-over) Reserve PtHA World titles in both Western Pleasure and Discipline Rail on her 10-year old APHA-PtHA gelding. “When I first got to ride him four months ago, I was so novice, I didn’t know anything. Kristen’s been working with me and Kelly rides him, too — I got to do some really good time on him and he just came together for me.”

Her success story was one shared by several Californians who returned from the June 7-18 PtHA World, which  hosts the world’s largest gathering of Pinto horses, ponies and miniatures. The 12-day competition showcased talented equines and exhibitors in a wide array of disciplines including jumping, reining, driving, roping, pleasure and halter.

Langston says she served as a show mom to her two daughters, Kelly and Karrie, now age 32 and 30, from youth 4-H ranks and into the local Paint Horse breed events in the 1980s. The tax accountant and board member of the High Desert Pinto Association says she decided to ride five years ago, and it has made all the difference.

“At 65, I’m out there riding with the kids, and I’m having the time of my life,” she said. “It keeps me young in the mind and young in the body.

“Time slips by way too fast,” she added. “If you don’t get out there and play, you miss it.”

Breaking even more records this year, exhibitors from across the U.S. and Canada converged on the event with more than 2,000 Pintos of every size making up 7,400 entries. Incorporated in 1956, the PtHA was formed to encourage the promotion of quality horses, ponies and miniatures with color and to establish a registry for maintaining their pedigrees and records. Currently, the association serves
approximately 12,000 members and boasts more than 141,000 registered Pintos.

Belt buckles by Gist Silversmiths and rosette ribbons were just the beginning of the approximate $225,000 in prizes awarded during the 12-day show. High point awards varied from Dale Chavez custom trophy saddles and Kensington protective products to jackets from Tioga Territory.

This was the second year of the Zone Invitational competition. The winner of each age division received a trophy saddle, reserve receiving a show headstall and third place received a show halter. All three awards were custom made by Dale Chavez Company.
