Eight Californians bring home AjPHA World titles from Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas – When the nation’s best Paint Horses and their young riders gathered at the Will Rogers Center last month, Californians made their presence felt, bringing home thirteen 2011 American Junior Paint Horse World Championships from the show held June 25-July 2.

In her last year of Youth competition, 18-year-old Cassandra Stambuk brought home AjPHA Youth World titles on two horses, taking the Limited Youth Working Cow Horse 18-under class on Hesa Rock Dancer and also bringing home the Youth Reining 14-18 on Smugglin Diamonds.

Stambuk, daughter of Edgar and Rae Stambuk of Yorba Linda, first competed in the AjPHA World Show in 2004 and hasn’t missed since, bringing home at least one Top Ten award each year. This year was her best yet, even though she just wrapped up her freshman year as a pre-veterinary student at Auburn University in Alabama.

“It was a really good way to end her youth years,” said Rae. “This year, she would ride whenever she’d get the chance – when she came home for her breaks from college, she would spend every day out at Mike and Christy Berg’s in Temecula, and then on the way home she’d stop at Jerry and Shelley Lundy’s in Norco and do roping events. She loves to ride.”

Stambuk has ridden Hesa Rock Dancer, an 8-year old gelding, for three years. She acquired Smuggling Diamonds, a 6-year-old double-registered AQHA gelding, two years ago.

Cassandra will return to Auburn this fall, then will continue to show. Rae says her daughter will continue to work with Jerry Lunde to progress her roping and with the Bergs for future National Reining Horse Association and Quarter Horse events.

The Stambuks weren’t alone in multiple championships at the AjPHA World. The Coulson family of Granite Bay brought home championships, as Makenna Coulson, age 8, took Toys Express (see cover) to both the Youth Walk-trot Showmanship and Youth Walk-trot Western Pleasure titles, and Brennan Coulson rode A Subtle Impulse to the Youth Trail 13-under championship.

Cassandra Stambuk of Yorba Linda rode Hesa Rock Dancer to the AjPHA title in Limited Working Cow Horse and also Smugglin Diamonds to the 14-18 Youth Reining crown.

Other 2011 AjPHA World Champions from California include: Desare Gilley of Vacaville, who took the Youth Versatility Challenge with her 7-year-old gelding, A Sudden Legacy; Joel Cogburn of Visalia in Youth Yearling Geldings with JBZ Tuff Enough; Drew Rogers of Bakersfield in Youth Western Riding 13-under on Shez Eye Candy, a 7-year-old mare; Shay Lynn Voorhees of Galt, who rode Zippos Noble Reason to the Youth Hunter Hack 14-18 crown; and Ashley Wildes of Lakeside, who took her 10-year-old gelding, Heza Texas Hobo, to the Youth Western Riding 14-18 championship.
