Susie Hutchison and Cantano

TEMECULA — One of Southern California’s most crowd-pleasing duos on the grand prix circuit, Susie Hutchison and Cantano, have ridden their last event together with last month’s sale of the 11-year-old Hanoverian stallion to Nancy Clark, who will campaign him in Europe under rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.

Clark is the owner of Michaels-Beerbaum’s legendary international jumper, Shutterfly, who was retired last November in Aachen at age 18.

“I’m excited for Cantano,” Hutchison said of her partner who was the 2010 Pacific Coast Horse Show Association Grand Prix Horse of the Year. “Meredith rode him fantastically — she tried him twice, and they were a great match. With her riding ability and Marcus (Beerbaum) on the ground helping her, I just look forward to seeing him be able to travel the world and get to do things I wouldn’t have been able to do with him.”

Cantano left Hutchison’s Temecula stables Tuesday and is expected to be ridden by Michaels-Beerbaum at a Blenheim event this weekend in San Juan Capistrano. After the Orange County competition, Michaels-Beerbaum, a Los Angeles native, is expected to ride Cantano in L.A. before returning to Germany.

Hutchison, who credits her ground person, Sandy Aston, and owner Jim Iverson for roles in Cantano’s fast-track to stardom the last few years, will focus on development of a strong string of young horses in her show barn at Casner Ranch. At Showpark in Del Mar last weekend, SIG Feng Shui was Young Jumper Champion for 7-8 year olds, and SIG Scrubs took Young Jumper Champion for 6-year olds.
