Reining classes and good times raise up SCQHEA show entries

BURBANK – The Southern California Quarter Horse Exhibitors Association calls its winter event at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center the “Show Me The Money” show, but it may be more accurate to label it “Show Me The Fun”.

With 2,243 entries and more than 300 horses, the SCQHEA show lit up the LAEC from Feb. 9-12, featuring four AQHA shows along with an NRHA show and a PCHA reining show. On top of the competition line-up, there were the attractions of “Exhibitor Appreciation Casino Night” on Friday and the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Association awards banquet on Saturday.

“It was a good time – a good, fun show and the entries were up,” said Larry Gimple of Track One Events, which managed the show now in its second year. “The NRHA entries were up and the PCHA reining entries were way up – they jumped from 64 last year to 148 this year. Overall, it was a great event – we had 80 more horses this year than last.”

The show attracted AQHA point-chasers as well as reiners looking to loosen up before the Cactus Reining Classic in Scottsdale this month.

Tom Foran, who trains out of the LAEC, enjoyed a stellar showing at the Show Me The Money event. He took AQHA Senior Horse Reining on both judges aboard Boggies Last Benz, as well as the NRHA Novice Open Horse II and the PCHA Open Reining. He took Lil Joe Tag to the NRHA Open Reining victory as well as the AQHA Senior Horse wins under both judges. Boonlight Belle won the NRHA Novice Horse Open I class with Foran, too.

Gary Roberts enjoyed a fine show, too, winning the Circuit Championship in Open Performance Mares with Ima Sneaky Hotrod. He also helped Imagine This Kiss take the Select All Around High Point Circuit title along with amateur Shelley Nunn Shepherd, who earned the Select Amateur Showmanship Circuit Championship. In the reining, Roberts took Yankees Premonition to AQHA Junior Horse Reining wins under both judges and also took the NRHA Snaffle Bit/Hackamore victory.
