Kimberly Ann Jackson serves Southern California with natural barefoot hoof care services. Most good ideas are simple – soundness, health, longevity. This tried and true work is founded on the hoof conformation and wear patterns of wild horses. It is also informed by the latest cutting edge science of the hoof. This astonishingly successful synergy brings hoof health to our domestic horses.
“This is the ideal method of hoof care because it has a unique and abundant wealth of benefits,” says Kimberly, whose clients repeatedly report that their horses have better balance, larger and freer strides and soundness – often where they have not had any in quite some time. Many clients appreciate her kindness with their horses, as respect for the horse is paramount.
Kimberly has been certified by the AANHCP and Liberated Horsemanship, two internationally recognized Hoof Care Institutions. She worked for five years with Jaime Jackson, the originator of this method, in his personal trim practice and the AANHCP, and has been practicing Natural Barefoot Hoof Care since 2003.
The horses she works with are from a broad range of disciplines — dressage, school horses, trail, endurance, rodeo, pleasure and more. She welcomes your most challenging hoof conditions such as laminitis, club foot and run-under heels. “It is most rewarding to see these horses sound out and thrive!” she says.
Lauren Mrozowski
Lauren Mrozowski serves Coastal California from the Northern Sonoma/Napa area to Los Angeles. She strives to provide the best possible hoof care for her clients and to create an individually tailored program for each horse that meets their needs.
Each horse requires a unique approach, she says, whether they do well barefoot, benefit from the support of a shoe, or custom therapeutic or even a composite product like the Epona shoe. As a lifelong horsewoman and horse-owner, she draws from a broad background in the equine industry to create a program that is unique and well-suited for your horse.
Pacific Coast Horseshoeing SchoolDon’t pick a school based on location — pick a school based upon curriculum. At the Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School, the instructors are — or have been—full-time, professional farriers. They have years of experience running a business and supporting their families by shoeing horses, and they teach more than just nailing steel on the bottom of horse’s feet.
If you are going to be away from home to learn the art of horseshoeing, you need the opportunity to practice after school and on weekends. The best way to get good is to practice, and you have to be provided with the opportunity. At PCHS, the forge area is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The classroom with video and book library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Also at PCHS, students start and graduate as a class. No “new guys” entering every week that would require us to stop teaching you to review old material for them. All lectures, demonstrations and shoeings are a smooth progression, one building upon the other, toward producing a professional farrier.
Also, PCHS does not use ill-mannered, dangerous horses for students to shoe. Horses are going to be the same type of horses you plan on shoeing when you go home. Students need good quality horses that allow them to practice professional skills. The opportunity to shoe 10 horses per day would be without merit if you can’t shoe any of them because they are dangerous. PCHA is so confident of its teaching ability and our professional facility that it offers a 100 percent refund to any student who withdraws from the program, for any reason, on or before the end of the first week of training.
Dane SpurlockCustomer Satisfaction is Priority No. 1 for Dane Spurlock Farrier Service, located in the Morongo Basin of Southern California. This farrier provides reliable, quality hoof care at affordable prices. Serving the high and low deserts of Southern California, customers and their horses get the attention and respect they deserve.
“I started this business for one reason, and that is to help horses,” says Dane. “My goal is to keep your horses sound, and feeling good.”
His approach is as simple as possible and includes no sponsored products or experimental “gimmicks”. From the information his clients provide, along with Dane’s observation of the horse’s conformation, quality trim and/or the shoe is the expectation.
Dawn JenkinsAre you frustrated with your farrier? Natural Hoof Care can help by providing lameness solutions, wild-hoof barefoot trims and sensible shoes. Dawn is a student of Gene Ovnicek, Pete Ramey, her farrier Uncle, Ink Knudson, and many others. She specializes in soundness solutions including the use of Epona plastic composite (flexible) shoes. Her hoof care career began with the needs of her own herd of homegrown endurance Arabian-cross horses – now four generations strong. She also offers one-on-one trimming instruction and has taught many horse owners, trainers, even farriers to trim and shoe. She works in both California and Hawaii. Dawn has written farrier, technical and creative articles for magazines and publications since 1990.

Is there a better option than nailing metal into your horse’s hoof? Yes, says Cavallo President Carole Herder.
“We say that a horse has five hearts — four frogs on the ground and the organ in the chest,” she says.
When weight-bearing, the frogs pump the blood and spread the heels apart, explains Carole, drawing the sole flat and allowing the bone structure of the leg to descend into the hoof. If you can accept that blood circulation is imperative to the flow of nutrients throughout the system and that healthy blood flow aids in prevention and facilitates healing, it follows that limiting circulation will lead to degeneration.
When metal is nailed in all around and the hoof is clamped in its smallest, most contracted position, the frog function may be limited and both proper blood circulation and shock absorption are dangerously impeded, she says.
Also, she adds, if you take a metal shoe and bang it against a hard surface, you will feel the tremors vibrate up your arm. In fact, even the nails cause vibration, which will compromise the integrity and break down hoof structure. Also, if you think that metal shoes provide protection, please consider that the outside walls of the hoof are already hard and that it is the softer middle sole area which needs protection.
“Using Cavallo Hoof Boots is the answer that can help solve or prevent these problems,” says Carole, who founded Cavallo in 1994. “Cavallo boots provide 100 percent hoof protection.”
