TEMECULA — Reined cow horse competitors know more than most that good things come in three’s, so it’s no surprise that the Third Annual Triple Crown, featuring separate awards in herd, rein and fence work as well as a composite, would be a hit.

The two-day event for non professional riders was exactly that Nov. 16-17, as the host Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association built on its strong foundation of the last two years, attracting 65 entries on 50 horses to Casner’s Ranch to get a piece of more than $10,000 in added money and awards.

“It’s a show we really believe in,” said Laura Edwards, SCRCHA President. “Non pro riders in all divisions are pretty important. They keep the industry going.”

Competitors hauled in from across the state as well as outside of it to participate, encouraged by friendly incentives put in place by the host club.

“This year, if any NRCHA affiliate came to the show, we gave them membership for the day so that they didn’t have to pay extra membership fees,” said Edwards. “Also, if they drove over 200 miles, they got a $50 stall credit, and if they drove more than 100, they got a $25 credit.”

The show pen featured tough competition, and there were many standouts. In the large Non Pro Limited classes, Erin Schlegel earned $1,119 for a Novice Non Pro Limited first-place performance on her Our Last Master, and Ingrid Vangelos continued her hot streak with Smooth As A Diamond, earning $739 for the championship in the Non Pro Limited.

John Pascoe returned to win the Non Pro Bridle on Miss Smoking Remedy, topping John Farris on Boomba Chic in the tough class to earn $561. Alan Needles and his Spark Master shined, recording the top reining score.

JJ Fisher of Arroyo Grande wrapped up a stellar 2013, winning the Triple Crown Snaffle Bit division on Keg Of Jules to earn $465. He and the 3-year old also were second to Tiffany Neal in a run-off for the high fence work at the show. Riding Hickorys Mr Chip, a bridle horse, Neal took the run-off for the saddle donated by Grant Williams and Choice Transportation.

Other division winners included Shelby Ray in the Novice Non Pro Bridle aboard Shiney Shotoftequila, Mary Tamme on Im Bratman in the Non Pro Derby, Neal and Hickorys Mr Chip
in Non Pro Youth, and Georgia Ashley Smith on Pepolenas Dark Star in the Youth Limited.

“It was a great show,” wrapped up Edwards. “I hope even more non pros will come and be a part of it next year.”
