Gorrell, Smooth N Cash are brilliant in Stakes Bridle Spectacular win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Jake Gorrell and his longtime partner, Smooth N Cash, used a 228 fence work to blast past the field and win the $25,000-added Holy Cow Performance Horses Open Bridle Spectacular held at South Point Equestrian Center.

The bridle event was held in conjuction with the 2014 National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes March 30-April 5, where 4- and 5-year-olds by NRCHA Subscribed Stallions competed in snaffle bits and hackamores.

Gorrell and Smooth N Cash (Smooth As A Cat X Dox Gavacash), have been together seven years, since the Hanford trainer recommended him to owners Don and Bonnie Roloff of Temecula.

“He’s kind of my baby,” said Gorrell, who started him. “I trained him and brought him along and got him for Bonnie.”

The gelding also has finished consistently in the money, with career earnings approaching $200,000. He is a three-time finalist at the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman and at last year’s NRCHA Derby, he took reserve in the Holy Cow Performance Horses Bridle Spectacular.

“This win is awesome,” said Gorrell, who had the high herd and rein work scores to claim the $15,375 champion’s paycheck by a wide 10-point margin. “He’s by far the best horse I’ve ever had. He’s so much fun in the herd work, and fence works like that — you just can’t beat him. That’s what this is all about — these great horses. This one is as good as they get.”

Nicknamed “Gadget” because he has all the tools — like the Inspector Gadget character — he was not the first horse Gorrell looked at when owner Bonnie asked him to find a contender for the 2008 Snaffle Bit Futurity. However, Gorrell kept coming back to the gelding.

“I looked and looked, and it’s not very often I get one in my barn to start that is of that caliber,” Gorrell recalled. “When I couldn’t find anything, I told Bonnie that I got this really nice horse in my barn, and he’s so good on the cow — he’s unbelieveable on the cow — and I think he’s got what it takes.”

Bonnie said OK, and the rest is history.

“I had not even seen this horse,” said Bonnie. “It was the first time another person had bought a horse for me without seeing it.”

Gorrell and Gadget finished fourth in the Snaffle Bit in 2008, just points from the World Championship.

“The cool thing about him, is funny — even though we haven’t had first place in a lot of major deals, he pulls a check almost everywhere we go,” said Gorrell. “What’s cool is that you know almost everywhere you go, you’re going to pull a good check. That makes it worthwhile. I’ll take a horse that finishes second or third any time of day.”

Gorrell said although Gadget is a good athlete, his willingness to please is his No. 1 trait.

“He does not want to be in trouble, and he always wants to please you,” said the trainer. “He’s always been that way — if he does anything good, you pet him, and he goes, ‘yep, I got it.'”

“And you can’t pull him off a cow,” he added. “He’s cowey — like a magnet. That’s what I first liked about him.”

Gorrell is quick to thank the Roloffs and also Holy Cow Performance Horses for boosting incentives to show bridle horses, the NRCHA’s most impressive equine athletes.

“To be able to pick up a check like this makes it all worthwhile, and it keeps good people like the Roloffs in the game,” he said. “I have the greatest clients in the world, by far!”

Bonnie has mutual appreciation for Gorrell and his accomplishments with Gagdet over the years.

“It’s an incredible ride — high and low,” Bonnie said. “But you have your trust — you pick the best horse you can find and try to pair it up with the best trainer, and you pray a lot. It’s just that combination. We love him and Jake loves him, and he stays sound and he just goes in and does his thing.”

Some of the Holy Cow Performance Horses added money returned to them in the form of the Reserve Championship check, won by the Holy Cow-owned entry, Hes Shinettes CD (CD Olena x Sheza Shinette x Shining Spark). Jake Telford piloted the 2007 stallion to a 656 combined score (208 herd/221 rein/227 cow), earning $12,813.
