TEMECULA — Presidents Week was back in February, but don’t tell that to the current and immediate past presidents of the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association, Laura Edwards and Cindy Mendoza, who came away from the June 21 Summer Slide Show with titles.

Edwards, who took the reins of the club a few years back, rode her Dun Leanin to SCRCHA and NRCHA Intermediate Non Pro Bridle wins, while Mendoza showed her TMC Cielo Solo for the first time in the hackamore and came away with SCRCHA and NRCHA Non Pro Hackamore crowns.

Showing “Solo” is special for Mendoza, too, because she is competing for the first time on offspring of the stallion she and husband Tony stand at their Eastside Ranch, Cielo Hickory.

“After I stepped down from being president, I had more time to focus on competing, and I had a couple good years,” said Cindy, who in recent years enjoyed success on her CP Remedy in Novice Non Pro action. “But this year is fun because Solo is by our stud — it’s been my first time to show one of our babies!”

The show at Casner’s Ranch gave members a good mid-year competition, as they round the turn toward qualifying for championship shows this fall.

The Mendozas say they started showing “Solo” too late in 2014 for a qualifying campaign, but other Eastside Ranch hopefuls did well at the Summer Slide, too. Tony continued his strong year on Rondalena Night, owned by his client Manuel Rojo, by winning the NRCHA and SCRCHA Open Hackamore classes at the Summer Slide.

“Rhonda is coming along real well,” says Tony, who leads SCRCHA Open Hackamore standings through June on the mare that he started as a 2-year-old. “Last year was her first year showing, and she’s doing real well.”

The Mendozas’ CP Remedy was back in the arena, taking 22-year-old Tarryn Greenhalgh to the SCRCHA and NRCHA 5000 Non Pro Limited titles.

“She kind of started at the end of last year to see if she would like it,” says Cindy. “She fell in love with it. This year, she’s tyring to be more competitive, and her goal is to make it with CP to the World — I think she can make it on that horse.”

Greenhalgh and CP Remedy currently lead the SCRCHA 5000 Non Pro Limited standings.

The SCRCHA’s Summer Slide series will resume with the Summer Slide 2 show Aug. 2.
