The Del Mar Racetrack will be honoring legendary war horse Staff Sergeant Reckless Sunday, Nov. 9, with a day at the races — and the fourth race of the day will be “The Staff Sergeant Reckless Race”! This fun and exciting day will help to raise money for the mare’s permanent monument at Camp Pendleton, a larger-than-life statue that will be a duplicate of the exquisite monument dedicated last summer at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., with the first race going off at noon. Cost is only $6 per person, while active duty military with proper ID and kids under 17 are free! There will be a book signing by Robin Hutton, author of “Sgt. Reckless, America’s Warhorse”, which has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for animal non-fiction two months now. The special festivities also will include food, music and lots of celebration! The Camp Pendleton Historical Society will match the funds raised, dollar-for-dollar, up to $30,000. Check out the ad on page 11 and learn more about this amazing project, at CampPendletonHistoricalSociety.org
