Derby Day returns to Elk Grove and region's top reiners do, too

Releases and Staff Reports - May 21st, 2015 - Cover Story, Show & Event News

1505BwpcoverELK GROVE – The thrill of the Derby and the excitement of the derbies collide this time of year at Brookside Equestrian Park, home of the Rein For The Roses. For five days, included Saturday’s Kentucky Derby interlude that features mint juleps, a hat contest and a pause for all to watch the race, the Rein For The Roses lived up to its formidable reputation.

This year’s fifth edition of the show, held April 29-May 3, marked the 25th anniversary of the venue under owner Bill Madden, and both the weather and attendance could not have been better. Four days of West Coast Reining Horse Association Affiliate ancillary classes were featured, as well as the Derby on the Derby, the Maturity and NRHA Green Reiner classes.

Thursday night’s Draw Party for the Open / Non Pro Derby and Open / Non Pro Maturity included a dinner of Alfredo Ala Brookside, garlic bread and salad, and this year’s draw gifts were sponsored by Mrs. Conn’s Equine bath sponges and Tack Warehouse in Woodland.

It was all business in the show pen, and competition once again proved stiff. Tied atop the Open Division were Mike Boyle on Jill Ramleth’s Spooks Eclipse and Ollie Galligan aboard Margaret Daly’s Skeets Tricked Out, both with 72s. Galligan and Skeets Tricked Out’s 72 also finished in a tie for the Intermediate Open title with Ricky Nicolazzi on Julie Ridgeway’s Designed With Shine.

For Connie Glavis and her horse Skippys Gotta Gun, it was "hats off" watching her sister Bonnie show.

Classes were large, and more than 75 riders competed in rookie and green classes on Saturday with 55 competitors in the Non Pro classes on Sunday.

Hailey Robison of Petaluma was a non-pro star, winning the Non Pro and Limited Non Pro titles with a 72 on her Our Happy Hour, just a half-point ahead of Elana Ranhoff of Alamo on her Taylor Made Magnum. Robison and Our Happy Hour also tied for the Intermediate Non Pro crown with Cady Shaw of Fresno aboard her Bulletproof.

Shaw’s 72 on Bulletproof won the Prime Time Non Pro Championship, too, edging Terry Holland of Lodi by a half-point aboard Holly Rowdy Whiz. The Masters Non Pro (60-over) went to Bonnie Garcia of Plymouth, who took her Gatalata Nicker to a 69 that outpointed a pair of reserve champions tied at 68, Ted Jacobson of Santa Rosa on Sir Don Q and Sandra Crippen of Watsonville riding Dun It At Dawn.

Youth champions included Lauren Hanson of Clements, co-champion of the 13-under on Tuff Sliding Peppy along with Campbell McLeod aboard Reeboks Rerun, both with a 70.50. Kaela Ranhoff of Petaluma won the Youth 14-18 title outright, marking a 71.00 on West Coast Hick that outdueled Savana Henderson on Kioti Boon, who had a 70.50.

In the aged events, Janiene Borror of Springville rode her Hick A Shine to a 144.50 that captured her the NRHA Maturity Non Pro Level 4 victory ahead of Shawna Smith on Cash N Too.
