The Sgt Reckless Memorial Fund is pleased to announce that the Department of Navy has accepted their $140,000 gift for a monument and grave marker for Staff Sergeant Reckless, the Korean War horse hero. Thomas W. Hicks, performing the duties of the Under Secretary of the Navy, signed off on the project on Wednesday, Sept. 23, granting permission to place the monument at the Pacific View Events Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Partnering with the Camp Pendleton Historical Society, plans will immediately get under way for the final fundraising, ground-breaking and installation. The Twin Oaks Valley Equestrian Association of San Marcos Horse Heritage Festival promotes the rich cultural history of San Marcos and the importance of preserving a rural and equestrian presence within the community. Come for the Horse Heritage Festival on Sunday, Oct. 11, as they Celebrate Rural Roots. It’s a fun-filled family event day at Walnut Grove Park in San Marcos. Twin Oaks Valley Equestrian Association and the San Marcos Historical Society present the Horse Heritage Festival and the 9th Annual Poker Ride & Stride. Saddle up your horse, leash up your pooch, or lace up your sneakers for a ride or a hike. Help the horse park by entering the three-mile “Ride & Stride”. The route takes you along Twin Oaks Valley’s quiet and horse-friendly trail system. Check-in at 8:30 a.m., start time 9 a.m. Proceeds from the Poker Ride improve the public horse show grounds at Walnut Grove Park. Following the “Ride & Stride”, family fun activities abound from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.. There will be pony rides, petting corral, frontier games, horsemanship demonstrations, Heritage Park activities and museum, pumpkin patch, crafts, food, music and much more! One of our special demonstrators will be Jeffrey Hedgecock, an international competitor highly skilled in the art of jousting and battle at arms, and founder of the Tournament of the Phoenix – just one week before their tournament in Poway on Oct. 16-18. Poway Valley Vaulters will be demonstrating their athletic and graceful acrobatics on the backs of moving horses.
