That’s what dressage enthusiasts call the Spooktacular Halloween Dressage Show, which came to the Del Mar Horsepark Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Show founder Lisa Blaufess began the event in 2013, looking to start a competitive, triple-rated Dressage show that focused on tons of fun and also gave back to a breast cancer non-profit to help make a difference in women’s’ lives.
“Giving back to breast cancer non profits is dear to my heart,” said Blaufess, who was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2010. The cancer went into remission in 2012, but this year she learned the cancer had returned, now as Stage 4. She has been undergoing chemotherapy since April, but, she says, “that wasn’t going to stop me from putting on this year’s Spooktacular!”
With help of an amazing group of volunteers, her show team and friends we were able to put on the largest triple rated Southern California Dressage show in 2015 that wasn’t a CDI. The weekend was filled with fun things competitors could participate in, from the Spooktacular Relay on Friday during the welcome reception (teams of 4 competed in a variety of tasks ending with dressing up in a clown costume, wig and clown nose to race to the finish line) to Saturday’s Costume Musical Freestyle Exhibition and very well attended Halloween Party in the White tent. On Sunday was the Milan Memorial Equitation Challenge for Adult Amateurs at first level and the Howling Dog Costume Contest which saw a record breaking 21 dogs entered this year.
Spooktacular has definitely become the funnest show of the season.
