BURBANK — A new year of reining competition launched Feb. 3-5 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center where the California Reining Horse Association held its season-opening Bunny Slide.
With more than $11,500 in added money and a qualifier for National Reining Horse Association Affiliate points, this event had no shortage of top horses and riders hopping to it.
Mike Berg and Hes Smart with a Gun, owned by ECRC Ranch, won the Open Circuit Championship. Ami Winders and ICR Jetsmoke Cody were Non Pro Circuit Champions.
The Limited Non Pro Circuit Champion was Heather Smith Porter and Lil Joe Tag, and winning the Limited Open was JoAnna Brewer on Spook Me Now. Debbie Valdero-Tweedy won the Intermediate Non Pro title on Plan Your Luck, and both the Prime Time Non Pro and Prime Time Rookie wins went to Laura Johnson on Vintage Sparks.
Shayla Schmida and Concealed Gunman captured the Green An Grass Circuit Championship, and top youths included Julia Schmida and Tick Tic Boom (14-18) and Peyton McGowan on Banjoboonsmal (13-under).
In Novice Horse competition, Tom Foran and Check Your Gun Lad won the Novice Horse Open, with the Novice Horse Non Pro ending in a tie between Jeanne Rosenberg and Some Kind Of Smart and Carla Hardin and Shootin For The Chics.
Erika Katz and Custom Silver Command were Rookie Level 1 Circuit Champions, with the Rookie Level 2 title going to Carla Hardin and Shootin for the Chics.
The next CRHA reining will be the Reiner Shine Show, the NRHA Affiliate Qualifier No. 3 and No. 4, on June 9-11. A one-day Reining Workshop will be held in Norco May 6at Ingalls Park Equestrian Center.
