Horse Play Rentals at Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center offers after school and summer horsemanship clinics for children age eight and older. The program focuses on basic horsemanship skills such as grooming, haltering, leading, saddling, bridling, and horse health. It provides instruction on Western riding and groundwork. Each day of the program is filled with learning, safety, and fun. The program will prepare students for more advanced riding lessons, how to care ?for their own horses someday, and/or participate in other aspects of the equine industry.

Horse Play Rentals also offers a five-week internship program. Please contact the office for the next scheduled dates. Students attending this program must be at least 14 years old; the program fee is $225 per student. Space is limited to five students per session. During the course of the program, students will learn how to safely handle horses, grooming tools and techniques, terminology, equine body language, Western and English tack, round penning, feed and medications, and how to handle emergency situations. They will also learn the Horse Play Rentals “Order of Conduct” (interaction with staff and customers, etc.) and more about being in the equine business. At the end of the Internship Program, students must pass both the skills and written examinations in order to begin an internship at HPR. Hours worked as an intern are unpaid. However, hours worked by HPR interns are redeemable for trail rides.

Miller Equestrian provides horseback riding lessons and horse training for Morgans and American Saddlebreds in a friendly, wholesome, family-oriented environment. Adults and children of all ages are welcome. Camp runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with swimming at the end of each day. Extended day options available as well. Students will have their own horse for the week. They will advance their riding skills from whatever point they start at, very beginner through competitive show riders. We have several instructors that will be teaching groups at different levels. The focus of the week will be learning to understand how your horse thinks and using that understanding to get your horse to work with you in a safe, happy environment. Safety is stressed at all times along with proper horsemanship skills. We will learn about health care, physical fitness of the horse, proper nutrition, transportation, anatomy and physiology, and of course grooming and tack care. Things like proper dental care and hoof care are also covered by leading professionals. This is a very hands-on camp and we encourage all students to try their hand at everything from driving a horse hooked to a cart, giving shots, worming, and of course cleaning stalls! At the end of each day we will cool down with a swim in the pool. Camp is $375. A $50 deposit is required to hold your spot.

Compton Jr. Posse (CJP) was created 27 years ago for inner-city youth to provide a year-round after school program using equestrian activities to inspire youth to reach their personal, academic and career goals – a powerful alternative to the equally powerful lure of gang and drug lifestyles. “Keeping Kids ON Horses and OFF the Streets!” they have fostered three generations of youth going to college, the military and into business ownership. CJP’s award-winning program has given inner city kids a framework for success by teaming them with horses and highly skilled instructors such as Olympic Gold Medalist Will Simpson. Since 2009, CJP has established the first inner city equestrian team to compete in the Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL). This team sport helps our students become eligible for equestrian scholarships. They launched a Mounted Jr. Ranger Program in conjunction with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority. This program has grown to include the Naturalist Explorers and Outdoor Leaders. CJP was awarded the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Silver Medal Award. Compton Jr. Posse’s summer camp programs include Equine Science, Horseback Riding Lessons, Ranch Activities, Environmental Studies, Life Skills Development, Career Development, Outdoor Survival Skills, and Riding Demonstrations. The week-long summer camps run from 8 am-2 pm, June through August; and open to all ages. Investments in our programs is an investment in kids future and an investment in tomorrow’s world communities. CJP is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
