TEMECULA — With $20,000 in added money and the region’s top competition, the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association put on another marvelous springtime event, the Jimmy Flores, Sr. Derby and Non Pro Triple Crown.
The four-day show May 18-21 included two full slates of horse show classes.
In the Open Derby, Nicolas Barthelemy shined on Manuel Rojo’s WRS Shiney Diamond, outdistancing reserve champions Shadd Parkingson on Hannes Winkler’s Cattin Downtown and Tucker Robinson on San Juan Ranch’s SJR Oaks Natasha. The win paid a winner’s share of $2,560, with the riders in the two-three split taking home $1,792 each.
Parkinson and Cattin Downtown also captured the Intermediate Open Derby and picked up an additional $705. Lyn Anderson, riding David and Barbara Archer’s Smokin Smart Cat, were second, earning $564.
In Non Pro Derby action, Tia Harari rode her Good Chance to Rien to a championship worth $1,345, topping reserve champion Kathryn Schaefer on her Dualon Chic. Cynthia Bias was third on her Truckin On Ice.
In the SCRCHA Non Pro Triple Crown, Sarah Bradley had a weekend to remember on her Very Smart And Sure. The duo won three Triple Crown classes, including the $2,000-added Non Pro Bridle Spectacular ($1,288 in earnings), the Intermediate Non Pro Bridle SPectacular ($788) and the Novice Non Pro Bridle Sectacular ($530), giving her
earnings of more than $2,600 for the three.
Kelsey Lynch, riding Jim Putnam’s Smart Ronnie Shine, was pushing Bradley all weekend, finishing reserve in the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro, and third behind Bradley and Georgia Smith riding Pepolenas Dark Star in the Novice Non Pro Bridle Spectacular.
The SCRCHA has two events lined up this summer in Temecula, a three-day show July 7-9 and another three-day show Sept. 8-10. The club will conclude it’s season Oct. 20-22 with its year-end show.
