BURBANK — The second big show weekend of the California Reining Horse Association came and went last month, as the CRHA Reiner Shine event brought together the region’s best June 7-11 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

A strong turnout is no surprise, as the CRHA had an added payout of $11,500 to go with qualifying points for two National Reining Horse Association Affiliate shows. As it always done the CRHA club provided a bounty of great awards, including leather and silver headstalls to the champions and silver knives to reserves.

In the Open, Daphne Foran showed Gail Hutcherson’s Whimpys Whiz Steps (Wimpys Little Step x RC Sonita Whiz) to the championship, outscoring Chuy Chavez on Allison Williams’s Oreo Cookie Whiz (West Coast Whiz x Sugars Lil Duchess). Daphne also showed Wimpys Whiz Steps to the Novice Horse Reserve Championship, finishing second in that division to Tom Foran showing Sleipner LLC’s Check Your Gun Lad (Magnum Chic Dream x Check Your Gun Lady).

In the Limited Open, JoAnna Brewer was a star, taking her Spook Me Now (Smart Spook x Solanos Pearl) to the championship ahead of reserve champion Anjelica Glosup riding Steve Silver’s Roocat (Cattitude x Doc Rooster Toy).

The non pros also had plenty to ride for — and lots of competition.
Cady Shaw proved to be a standout on this weekend, taking three Circuit Champion titles. Riding her Dream Whiz Me (Magnum Chic Dream x Whiz Out Chex), Shaw took Circuit crowns in the Non Pro, Prime Time Non Pro and Novice Horse Non Pro divisions.

Right on their hooves in reserve were Casey Bibbs on Spooks For The Chics (Smart Spook x Chic In The Bar) in the Non Pro, David Adams on his Dunits Lil Gun (Lil Gun x Hollywood Baby Dunit) in the Prime Time Non Pro, and Carla Hardin on her Shootin For Chics (Spooks Gotta Gun x This Chicsdundreamin) in the Novice Horse Non Pro.

Bibbs was a multi-champion star in his own right at the 2017 Reiner Shine, winning both the Intermediate Non Pro and the Limited Non Pro titles aboard Spooks For The Chics in addition to the reserve in the Non Pro.

Kristie Banks was the bright-shining Rookie, taking both the Level 1 and Level 2 Circuit Championships on her AR Oakies Last Stand (Starlights Wrangler x Okie Dokie Dunnit). Phillip Sancken captured the Rookie Prime Time title on his Bulletproof (Colonels Smoking Gun x Tasha Chex), with the reserve going to Shayla Schmida on her Concealed Gunman (Colonels Smoking Gun x The Green Jacket). Schmida and The Green Jacket also were the Reserve Circuit Champions in the Green As Grass Division, where they took second place to Christina Garner on her Stars Shine On Nic.

There was no youth that could keep up with Ashley Jackson in the 14-18 Division, as she swept the Circuit Championship and Reserve on Smart Like Steady (Steady Tradition x Bar S Docs Gay Bar) and Shine Spook Shine (Smart Spook x Ebony Shines), respectively.

In the 13-under division, Mary Riley Cachat captured the both the Circuit Championship and Reserve, riding Hollywood Boom Town (Hollywoodstinseltown x Cheeky Boom) and Dun Its Legacy (Hollywood Dun It x Whiz N Darlin), respectively.
