TEMECULA—The old song, “It Never Rains in California,” was out of tune in May, but raindrops didn’t dampen spirits of the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association at its Jimmy Flores, Sr. Memorial.
The event, held May 17-19 at Green Acres Ranch, drew top competition from the region.
In the high-profile Bridle Spectacular classes, Jason Grimshaw rode Heather Vatcher’s Sippin Boons Farm (Smart Boons X Peppy Nicolena) to a cumulative 225 and a decisive 3.5-point win the $1,500-added Bridle Spectacular Open, collecting $923. Reserve Champion Roy Rich, aboard Rocking J Ranch’s Soula Shining Star (Docs Soula X Shining Suzana) earned $692. There were eight entries in the Open Spectacular, judged by Bobby Hunt.
Non Pro Karen Stallings convincingly won the $1,500-added Bridle Spectacular Non Pro, riding her Sheza Voodoo Dr (Shiners Voodoo Dr X Leapin Lindy Chex) to a 217.5 score that paid $1,082. Hannah Warde was reserve champion on her Zackly Right Time, earning $721.
Vatcher rode her Sippin Boons Farm to a 214.5 score that won the $500-added Non Pro Limited Spectacular title, earning $928. Erin Ellison was reserve aboard Shootn Starlight (Finalight X Miss Rematchex) and earned $557.
The show’s memorial namesake, Jimmy Flores, Sr., died in 2015 a week shy of his 88th birthday after a distinguished career that spanned eight decades and touched thousands internationally. He began training in the 1940s and settled in the Perris area in 1966. In 2009, he was named the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stockhorse Man of the Year. He is also fondly remembered by the thousands he encountered at shows throughout the U.S., representing his Jimmy Flores Cowboy Gear.
The next SCRCHA event will be the County Boil Show, scheduled for July 12-14 at Green Acres Ranch. The final club event, the September Classic and Year-end Awards, will also take place at Green Acres Sept. 20-22.
