BURBANK—The love of reining is a strong one, and that was evident as the California Reining Horse Association launched its 2020 season with the Sweetheart Reining Show.
Held Jan. 30-Feb. 2 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, the competition this year complimented its full CRHA slate with NRHA Affiliate Qualifier classes as well as AQHA, PCHA and Jack & Linda Baker Qualifier classes. Also, the CRHA shows feature ranch riding classes, hosted by the association’s Youth Club, which directly receives the proceeds.
In Open Division, Tom Foran found front-running success on Taylor Sheridan’s Rey Town, including a 72 that won the NRHA Open class. Foran also took second with a 71 on Smoking Hot General, owned by Day Creek Ranch. In third was Dallas Wedel on Richard Martinelli’s Whizin Like Rooster with a 70.5.
Wedel and Whizin Like Rooster also fared well in the respective Intermediate Open and Limited Open classes, winning both. To top it off, he claimed the CRHA Gents class with a 68.5 on Jenny Kelly’s Im Ichin To Smoke, edging DeWayne Copus on his Daddy Day Care (67.5) and Chuy Chaves on Kelly Tillman’s Magnumatic (66.5).
Kristi Berg rode ECRC Ranch’s Hes Smart With A Gun to a 71.5 to win the NRHA Intermediate Open, just ahead of Wedel and Whizin Like A Rooster, who carded a 71.0.
In Youth competition, Mary Riley Cachet captured the AQHA Youth Reining class and the CRHA 14-18 class on her Trashy Spookshow. Taylor Banks went 1-2 in the AQHA Youth L1 class, taking the championship on AR Oakies Last Stand and the reserve on RickyBacInHollywood. Makynna Barger was the 10-under Short Stirrup Champion on All Natural Shine.
Next big stops for CRHA will happen at the Hollywood Charity Show May 26-31, the Summertime Slide at the Dam Aug. 7-9, and The Challenge Oct. 20-25.
