New year, same excitement in SCRCHA opener

TEMECULA — Southern California s cow horse community came together Jan. 5-7 to salute its 2023 champions and also launch the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association’s 2024 campaign.
SCRCHA members were glad to be back on their horses after the bustle of the holidays, and the Kick Off Show sponsored by Dr. Doug Lawrence and Dr. Wayne McNeel of Equine Health Management was a great start to the new campaign.
Tucalota Creek Ranch hosted the show, including a fun pizza party with wine tasting that took place while SCRCHA 2023 Year End Champions received their buckles and awards.
Friday featured fresh cows and chilly weather in the cutting and herd work. Chele McGauly judged the weekend.
Open cutting was won by Kiana Cat ridden by Chris Delmer, and Non Pro was won by Mark Gaiser aboard Spark N Boom. The Junior Horse blue went to Roy Rich aboard RR Lay Lady Rey. The Open herd work classes were well-attended with Jason Grimshaw riding Smart Magic Rebel to first place. Lester Walker and his mount, All Hail Da Vinci, were winners in Non Pro herd work.
Ranch Riding classes had plenty of entries, and the ranch riders were ready to face the New Year with high scores! Standout performances were had by SmokeJumper, ridden by Rosie Cowley for owner Kristina
Tracy in Junior Ranch Riding. Senior Ranch Riding went to Make Mine A Juice, ridden and owned by Connie Bowman. Huckleberry Cat, ridden by owner Jenni Dawson, won the Amateur Ranch Riding. Jeanies Chic, ridden by Danica Anderson and owned by Gabriella Threadgill, won the Youth Division.
During lunch on Saturday, future cow horse enthusiasts showed off their horsemanship, as the SCRCHA had its largest turnout of Walk Trot and Leadline entries ever. It warmed the hearts of everyone to see young horse people riding and sitting up proudly!
Saturday’s cow horse standout winners were Half Past Boon, ridden by Roy Rich and owned by Rocking J Ranch in in the Open Bridle. The Limited Open Bridle was won both Saturday and Sunday by Rob Grumann on LilRowdyOneTime, and the Open Hackamore was won by Magic Vintage Lace, ridden by Craig Cowley for owners David and Gina Kland.
On both Saturday and Sunday, Lisa Fonden swept the Non Pro Bridle Division aboard RJ Wheres My Sock. The Open Two Rein was captured both days by DragnReys, owned by Paul Yoder and shown by Rich. Youth Boxing and Junior In Youth Boxing, Hayes Stroschein took Cee Mr Cats Merada, owned by Julie Whipple, to first place both days.
Newcomer Caylee Perez, riding her SmoothaRoo, won the Youth Boxing. Cynthia Capetillo, riding her Tisa Pale Face Peach, won the Non Pro Boxing class, and FTR Smart Smoke and rider Linda Kiernan won the Intermediate Non Pro Boxing.
Alexis Cole won the Limited Non Pro Boxing on both Saturday and Sunday aboard her Whata Chic Olena TR, and Amy Diener won the Box Drive class aboard RR Brown Eyed Girl.
Spectacular winners were as follows: Open Spectacular, Magic Vintage Lace, ridden by Craig Cowley; Non Pro Bridle Spectacular, RJ Wheres My Sock, ridden by Lisa Fonden; Non Pro Boxing Spectacular, FTR Smart Smoke, ridden by Linda Kiernan.
Non Pro Boxing, Sweet Little Ruby, ridden by owner Natascha Benz Stevenson, captured the title, and in the Intermediate Non Pro Boxing, Amy Diener rode her RR Brown Eyed Girl to first place. Select Non Pro Boxing was captured by Im Ichin To Smoke, ridden and owned by Jenny Kelly. Linda Kiernan won the Box Drive Box on Sunday aboard FTR Smart Smoke.
The SCRCHA March show at Tucalota Creek Ranch on March 15-16 has been replaced by a two day schooling show with the same dates and location. Watch for more information on this non-judged, schooling opportunity.
