When the January fires hit, volunteers stepped in

From Horsetrader staff reports

BURBANK — It will be a while before the Los Angeles community recovers from the wildfires that devastated the area. The tragic week of Jan. 7-10 charred more than 36,000 acres just with the Eaton and Palisades fires, where close to 16,000 structures were destroyed and another 2,000 damaged. Twenty-nine lives were lost.

Amid the intense first 48 hours, thousands of horses and other animals were evacuated — most of them to three shelters: the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, Los Angeles Pierce College, and Hansen Dam Equestrian Center. Jennie Nevin of the LAEC shared these images of the effort at her facility, which was quickly filled to capacity when 408 horses, donkeys and other large animals joined 500 of its daily equine boarders. Most evacuated animals have returned home or to their new location, but more than 100 remain at the center.
